Avarekalu Kurma /Korma is prepared with field bean’s or Lilva bean’s which is spicy and delicious.
Avarekalu /Indian Lilva Bean’s are mostly available in Karnataka Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.
These beans are widely available in Karnataka in the season of December January and February months.
Avarekayi/Lilva beans belong to the family of legumes originated from India which are mostly eaten by people of Karnataka Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
Lilva beans are available in Japan as FUJIMAME.
Avarekayi means Lilva beans in kannada and Avarekalu means  pods 0f beans.
In karnataka Lilva beans are widely grown in the months of  November to February.
In this Avarekayi season people buy tons of lilva beans to prepre their favroute seasonal food recipes.
There are number of dishes prepared with fresh Avarekayi some are like Avarekalu Pulav sambar saaru Biryani palya kurma Vade (deep fried fritters) friesd curries in salads and the list goes on.
Avarekalu kurma recipe is spicy dish cooked with ground masala using fresh coconut and Cashewnut.
You can accomplish Avarekalu kurma with rice rotti or chapati.
Avarekalu kurma is one from fav dish.

Video Recipe Of Avarekalu Kurma

Ingredients Required

  1. Avarekalu/Lilva beans – 100 gm’s
  2. Onions – 1 (big size)
  3. Tomato – 1 (big size)
  4. Curry leaves – 6

For tempering:

  1. Oil – 1 Tbsp.
  2. Mustard seeds – 1 Tsp
  3. Cumin seeds – 1 Tsp
  4. Turmeric powder – 1 Tsp

Masala Ingredients

  1. Onions – 1 cup 
  2. Tomato – 1cup
  3. Curry leaves 1/2 cup
  4. Coconut – 1/2 shell (1 cup)
  5. Coriander seeds – 1Tsp
  6. Clove – 2 no’s
  7. Cinnamon – 1″ stick
  8. Cardamom – 2 no’s
  9. Cashewnut’s – 10 to 15 no’s
  10. Ginger – 1″ piece
  11. Garlic pods – 4 to 5 
  12. Chili powder – 1 Tsp
  13. Salt – 1 Tsp (as per your requirement)

Step by Step Preparation Method

Step 1)

Firstly clean the beans in water then remove the pods from beans. wash the pods with water. To prepare avarekalu kurma/korma you can even use avarekalu  beans by removing the skin of pods.

Step 2)

Take a flat pan or kadai add 1 Tbsp of oil and heat in a medium flame then add 1 Tsp of mustard seeds 1Tsp of cumin seeds handful of fresh curry leaves sauté and splitter them. 

Step 3)

Then add one chopped onion one chopped tomato sauté for a minute and cook .

Step 4)

Now add 1 Tsp of turmeric powder mix with tempering and sauté it, then add 100 Gm’s of avarekalu/lilva beans roast and sauté for five minutes.

Step 5)

Add two cup of water into the tempered avarekalu/lilva beans mix altogether then close the pan with a lid and cook for 10 minutes.

Step 6)

To prepare ground masala for avarekalu/lilva beans kurma , take a small jar add 1 chopped onion curry handful of curry leaves 1 chopped tomato f 1 cup freshly grated coconut coriander seeds 1 Tsp 2″cinnamon stick  1 cardamom 2 cloves 15 to 20 cashew nuts 1 tsp of red chili powder 1 Tsp of crystal salt 1″ fresh ginger and  5 to 6 pods of garlic , grind or blend altogether into a smooth  masala paste, add water if required. 

Step 7)

Now open the lid,  check the cooked beans by pressing with your fingers , if not then close the lid again and cook until beans becomes soft. Once beans are cooked add ground masala paste into the pan, sauté  and cook for five more minutes. Add if required or according to your required consistency. 

Step 8)

Add handful of freshly chopped coriander leaves give a final mix. cook for few seconds.

Step 9)

Transfer into a serving bowl or casserole, serve hot with rice or chapati or roti of your choice.

Step 10)

Garnish prepared Avarekalu kurma/korma with coriander leaves and grated coconut. Enjoy Avarekalu kurma/Lilva beans kurma with your loved one’s. 

Note/Tips

  • Use freshly peeled avarekalu/lilva beans.
  • fresh coconut can be substituted with dry coconut 
  • You can  pre cook avarekalu in pressure cooker to save your time.
  • Add water according to your requirement.
  • You can use lilva beans by removing the skin of pods by soaking them in water.
