Paneer Makhani is Indian dish mostly prepared in North Indian cuisine.

Paneer/ cottage cheese is vegetarians favorite which is used in preparing most of the dishes like palak paneer, paneer sandwich, paneer paratha, paneer dosa, paneer butter masala, paneer burgi, paneer buns, in stir fries, tikkas and more, the list goes on…paneer is widely used cheese in Indian cuisine.

Paneer Makhani is super delicious creamy and soft gravy curry prepared with butter/ghee, roasted cardamom powder, cashew nuts paste and tomato puree, paneer /cottage cheese cubes and full cream milk is added to give the dish extra taste and creamy soft texture.

Makhani means butter in Hindi language, so the name of the dish is called as Paneer Makhani as the dish is prepared with butter, you can replace butter with ghee/clarified butter.

Paneer Makhani is rich gravy curry preparation, tastes sweet and creamy, soft and smooth in texture, you can add extra butter and cream as per your taste to enhance the flavors of the dish or to make the dish more creamy, you can accomplish the dish with Roti/Naan/Kulcha/Rumal roti or Tandoori roti. (Indian flat bread)

Ingredients required to prepare Paneer Makhani Recipe

Ghee/Butter - 2 tbsp.
Cardamom powder - 1/4 tsp.
Salt - 1 tsp
Cjilli powder - 1/2 tsp.
Sugar - 1 tsp.
Garam masala powder - 1 tsp.
Tomato puree - 2 cups.
Cashewnuts paste - 1 cup
Kasoori methi - 1/4 cup
Full cream milk - 1 cup.
Paneer/cottage cheese - 100 gms
Fresh cream - 1 tbsp.

Step by Step preparation method of Paneer Makhani Recipe.

Step 1)

To prepare Paneer Makhani recipe, keep the required ingredients handy, make sure to prepare cashew nuts paste and tomato puree before you start making Paneer Makhani (you can check preparation method of cashew nuts paste and tomato puree in the notes section given below)

Step 2)

Take a flat non stick pan, pre heat for few seconds, add 2 tbsp. of ghee/ butter, add 1/4 tsp of cardamom powder, sauté and roast, then add 1 tsp of salt and 1/2 tsp of dry red chilli powder.

Step 3)

Add 1 tsp of sugar (optional), 1 tsp of garam masala, roast and cook for few seconds.

Step 4)

Now add 2 cups of tomato puree into the pan, mix and cook for five minutes, stir in between.

Step 5)

Add 1 cup of full cashew nuts paste into the pureed tomato spice puree, sauté and stir in low flame until cream combines well with puree.

Step 6)

Add 1 cup of  crushed kasuri methi/ dried fenugreek leaves, mix slowly and cook for 5 minutes or until gravy becomes thick in consistency.

Step 7)

Add 1 cup of full cream milk into the gravy, mix well, cook for few seconds.

Step 8)

Now add 1 cup /100 grams of paneer or cottage cheese into the pan, mix gently keeping the flame low, cook for 5 minutes.

Step 9)

Then add 1 tbsp. of cream/malai, sauté and cook for a minute, switch off the flame, dish out in a serving bowl.

Step 10)

Garnish with ginger flakes, crushed kasuri methi and fresh coriander leaves, top it with fresh cream, serve with your favorite roti/naan/paratha (Indian flat bread).


  • To prepare cashew nuts paste soak cashew nuts in warm water for 1 hour, then grind in a mixture until paste becomes soft in texture, you can add required amount water while grinding the paste.
  • To prepare tomato puree boil chopped tomatoes in 1 cup of water for 5 minutes, et it cool for sometime, then peel the skin and blend into a fine puree. 
  • Use fully ripen red tomatoes to prepare tomato puree.
  • You can use butter or ghee/clarified butter to prepare paneer makhani.
  • You can add cream as per your choice to make it more creamy in taste.
  • Use full cream milk or Amul cream to enhance the creamy flavour of the dish.
  • Cook in low flame.
  • Cut paneer into cubes or rounds  as per your choice. your size and shape.
  • You can 1 tbsp of tomato ketchup to make the dish little bit. sweet and tangy
