In this post I am going to share step by step preparation of stir fried Banana Flower Curry recipe.
Stir fried Banana Flower Curry is soft in texture, tastes crunchy and chewy.
Banana Flower Curry is healthy fiber rich and nutritious.

Banana flower (florets) are chopped into small pieces along with the heart of banana, soaked in butter milk and then boiled in fresh water for 5 minutes to remove the sticky texture, then strained and used to cook the recipe.

Banana recipes are little bit time taking as it includes peeling the petals, removing the stigma, chopping and preboiling.

Banana flower is used in many ways like in stir fried curries, gravy curries, sambars, deep fried and in fritters etc.. what ever the recipe it may be adding banana flower enhances the flavour and taste of the dish.

To prepare stir fried banana flower curry, banana flowers or florets are preboiled strained and sautéed in peanut oil by adding onions green chillis red chillis, chana dal and spices like mustard seeds and cumin seeds to flavour the dish, freshly grated coconut is added to enhance the taste, garnished with fresh coriander leaves, served with plain rice with ghee or clarified butter or you can serve with roti or chapati(Indian flat bread).

Ingredients Required to Prepare Stir Fried Banana Flower Curry

Banana Blossom (big in size) - 1
Boiled Banana flowers/florets - 2 cups (approx)
Peanut oil - 1/4 cup
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
Chana dal/yellow lentils - 1 tbsp
Chopped onions - 1 cup
Chopped green chillies - 4 to 5
Dre red chillies - 2
Salt - 1 tsp
Fresh grated coconut - 1 cup

Step by Step process of how to peel and chop Banana Blossom

Step 1)

Firstly clean fresh Banana Blossom throughly, with the help of your fingers peel petals(bracts) , remove florets/flowers inside the overlapping petals one after the other till you get heart of the blossom, separate petals, flowers/florets and heart of the the blossom, keep aside.

Step 2)

Now pluck stigma of each floret/flower having bulb on top, as shown in the picture, refer video to know in brief how to pluck stigma.

Step 3)

Then chop the flower into small pieces as shown in the picture, then slit the heart of banana blossom into two halves horizontally or verticall,chop into thin slices, mix chopped banana heart and chopped flowers together for further boiling process.

Step by step process of how to soak and boil Banana flower/florets

Step 1)

Prepare 1/2 liter of  unsalted buttermilk in a deep bottomed mixing bowl, now add chopped banana flowers and heart of banana, soak them in butter milk for about 5 to 8 minutes, now strain the soaked flowers after 5 minutes, keep aside for further boiling process.

Step 2)

Now take a deep vessel. pour 1/2 litre of fresh water, heat water for minute, then add soaked and strained banana flowers and heart into the water, boil for 4 to 5 minutes in a medium flame.

Step 3)

Add 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder into the boiling water, stir once with the help of a ladle or spoon for few seconds, boil for a minute and switch off the flame, now strain the water using a strainer to remove water from the flowers, keep the strained flowers aside for further curry preparation.

Step by step preparation of Stir Fried Banana Flower Curry

Step 1)

To prepare stir fried banana flower curry, firstly heat 1/4 cup of peanut oil in a non stick flat pan, add dry spices like 1 tsp of mustard seeds, 1 tsp of cumin seeds, crackle them for few seconds, then add 1 tbsp. Chana dal/ yellow lentils into the pan, sauté and roast until brown.

Step 2)

Now add 4 to 5 green chillies slit into four halves into the pan, roast for a minute, then add 2 dry red chillies, roast until crisp.

Step 3)

Add 1 cup of chopped onions, sauté and fry for until onions become transparent, then add 1 tsp of turmeric powder into the pan , mix and sauté for few seconds.

Step 4)

Now add soaked boiled and strained banana flowers along with heart of banana into the fried onions.

Step 5)

Now sauté altogether, fry for 2 minutes, now close the pan with a lid, cook for 3 to 5 minutes, or until flowers becomes soft and cooked.

Step 6)

Add 1 cup of freshly grated coconut, sauté and fry for 2 to 4 minutes in a low flame, now add 1 tbsp. of roasted sesame seeds powder into the pan, fry for a minute.

Step 7)

Now add 1 tsp of salt or as per your requirement, mix in with stir fried banana flower curry.

Step 8)

Stir fry prepared banana curry for a minute in low flame, now add fresh chopped coriander. switch off the flame.

Step 9)

Transfer the prepared stir fried Banana into a serving bowl, garnish with coriander leaves.

Step 10)

Serve with hot rice or brown rice with a dollop of cow ghee/clarified butter  with a roasted jeera/cumin Papad/Happala for munching, you can accomplish stir fried Banana flower with roti/chapati (Indian flat bread) or poori (deep fried bread)

Banana Blossom/Floret

Banana blossoms have tremendous nutritional value and are rich source of dietary fibre and some biologically active compounds like vitamin C, tannin, myoinositol phosphates, and alpha tocopherol .

Banana flower is packed with essential minerals such as phosphorous, calcium, potassium, copper, magnesium and iron, vital for several bodily functions.

Cooked banana flowers can help deal with pain abdomen and reduces the menstrual bleeding, Consumed along with curd or yoghurt, these flowers increase the progesterone hormone in the body and reduce bleeding. 

Banana flower contains phenolic acids, tannins, flavonoids and various other antioxidants. These antioxidants neutralize free radicals, prevent oxidative damage, and reduces the risk of heart diseases and cancer.  

The richness of iron in banana flowers can remarkably pump iron stores and improves symptoms associated with anaemia such as fatigue, tiredness, irregular heartbeat, pale skin, cold feet and hands. Regular addition of banana flower in the meal increases the levels of red blood cells and combats iron deficiency and anemia.
